Hunter Schools MTB aims to provide all school students within the Hunter Region (including Government, Catholic and Independent) the chance of developing skills both for competition and recreational riding and to provide opportunities for students to race. The program has a racing component and a coaching component. As a group, we felt there was a need to enhance skills for safe and fun riding but to also provide students with pathways and support to race against some of the best athletes in the country.
The Hunter Area has produced a number of successful athletes. One of those, Jason English, is a teacher at Hunter Christian School. Jason is a multiple National Champion for marathon and 24hr mountain bike events and has won the Solo 24 Hour World Championships on seven occasions.
Teachers from Hunter Christian School and other qualified mountain bike coaches from the Hunter area offer weekly after-school mountain bike coaching at Glenrock Mountain Bike Park. Hunter Christian School is recognised as a Mountain Bike Australia School of Excellence because of this after-school coaching program and its organisation of the Hunter Schools MTB XCO Championships.
